An email account is usually blocked for one of two reasons: too many failed login attempts triggered the server's security system, or the mailbox was flagged for sending suspicious or spam-like traffic. Follow the steps below for your control panel to check the block and clear it.
Why email accounts get blocked
Most blocks fall into two categories. The first is a temporary security block caused by repeated failed logins, often because an old device or app is still trying to connect with a password that has since changed. The second is a spam-protection block, which happens when a mailbox or script sends an unusual volume of outgoing mail, sometimes because a password has been compromised.
cPanel
- Log in to your cPanel account.
- Go to the Email section and open Unblock Email Accounts.
- Check the list of blocked entries and read the reason shown next to each one.
- Carry out any required action noted for the suspension, such as updating a mail client with the correct password or removing a compromised script.
- Click Activate Account once the action is complete.
- Note that this option is disabled after three activation attempts without the required fix being made, so complete the fix before clicking activate.
DirectAdmin
- Log in to your DirectAdmin account.
- Go to E-Mail Accounts and select the domain the mailbox belongs to.
- Look in the Sent column for an entry marked
Blocked, even if the account showsNot Suspended. - Click Change Password / Quota next to the blocked mailbox.
- Set a new, strong password for the mailbox.
- Update every device and email app that uses this mailbox with the new password.
Changing the password at control panel level clears the block, because the system assumes anyone still using the old password may be the source of the problem, so the reset must come from the control panel rather than from inside the mailbox itself.
If the block is IP-related
Repeated failed logins can also cause your IP address, rather than the mailbox, to be temporarily blocked by the server's brute-force protection. These blocks are usually short, often clearing after around 10 to 20 minutes, but repeated failed attempts during that window can extend the block.
- Wait 15 to 30 minutes before trying again.
- Try connecting from a different network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, to confirm whether the block is tied to your current IP address.
- Check every device and app using the mailbox for an outdated saved password, and update or remove it.
- If the block persists after this, contact support so the IP address can be checked and cleared on the server.
Troubleshooting
- Wrong password, not a block: double-check caps lock and that you are using the current password before assuming the account is blocked.
- Block keeps coming back: an old phone, tablet or email program is probably still trying to log in with an outdated password in the background.
- cPanel activation option disabled: this means three attempts were made without the required fix; complete the fix first, then contact support to reset the attempt count.
- DirectAdmin mailbox still shows Blocked after a password change: confirm the change was made from E-Mail Accounts in the control panel, not from inside Webmail.
- Spam block linked to a website form: check contact or comment forms on your site for outdated plugins or scripts, as these are a common cause of unexpected outgoing spam.
Preventing future blocks
- Update the password on every device and mail app as soon as you change a mailbox password.
- Use a strong, unique password for each mailbox.
- Keep website forms, plugins and scripts up to date to reduce the risk of them being used to send spam.
- Remove or fix any mail client that repeatedly fails to connect rather than leaving it running.
If you have followed these steps and the account is still blocked, contact support via live chat on the website or by opening a support ticket from the client area.
